Train at HHMP

Empowering Medical Trainees

Education is a core focus at HHMP both for our own staff and for future generations. We regularly host medical, nursing, and allied health students, as well as GP registrars, who work and learn alongside our team. Most weeks, patients will meet a trainee during consults or in the treatment room.

Student from Australian and International universities help create the vibe and learning culture around the practice. Some recent students have attended from:

  • The University of Sydney
  • Macquarie University
  • The University of Newcastle
  • The Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands
  • HocMai University in Vietnam

We have had students from, The University of Sydney, Macquarie University, University of Newcastle, The Free University of Amsterdam in Holland, HocMai University in Vietnam and Kathmandu University in Nepal to name a few. Medical students often observe and partake in patient care and procedures. The reception staff will inform you if your doctor has a medical student when you arrive for your appointment. Please let us know at reception if you are uncomfortable with this so we can inform you GP.

Educational Meetings

Lunchtime education meetings are held at the HHMP education room on a regular basis. These occur a minimum of once but usually twice per week. All clinical team members are encouraged to attend. At these meetings, one of our GPs may speak about a topic of relevance or an invited specialist may present.

These meetings are a great way to learn and for the whole team to connect and share ideas. Such meetings are prioritised at HHMP because we believe learning together leads to better outcomes for all.

The team helps students understand the theory involved but also believe that the best way to learn is by doing (in a safe, supported and supervised environment). They challenge students to apply what they have seen in textbooks and lectures to the real world.

The nursing team covers a range of topics including patient care, infection control, dressings, vaccinations, ECG, spirometry, infusions, IM injections, sterilisation and much more.
Enquiries about nursing training or placement at HHMP should be directed to Nurse Gabby or Nurse Charlotte.

Clinical Audits

HHMP doctors are involved in clinical audits through the National Prescribing service or other relevant education providers. Such audits compare our performance and patient care against doctors in similar areas and nationally.

The results help guide our practice and allow us to identify any areas where we can do better and act on these.

International collaboration

Hunters Hill Medical Practice is proud to be the model general practice for the Hoc Mai Foundation. General practice is a young specialty in Vietnam and twice per year we host Vietnamese specialist doctors through the Hoc-Mai Foundation to explain to help show the vital role general practice plays in the health system. Through these collaborations we help foster comradery and a shared understanding between Australian and Vietnamese doctors. Dr Badr and Dr Bowes (now retired) continue to visit Vietnam to meet and collaborate with faculty at Hoc Mai University.

Our practice has also hosted doctors from the UK, Nepal and Spain. We also regularly host medical students from The Netherlands for their community medicine placement.
