Expert Support for Your Mental Wellbeing

Almost half of all Australian adults will face mental ill-health at some point. Unlike physical illness or injury, mental health difficulties aren’t always obvious, but they are equally important to address and deserve the same level of care and attention. Talking about your mental health can be challenging but asking for help is a sign of strength. Seeking support earlier ensures you receive timely help. Hunter’s Hill Medical Practice brings together GPs and psychologists to provide diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of mental health issues.

How can your doctor help?

Talking to your doctor is a good place to start as they can provide treatment or refer you to other services. Doctors at Hunter’s Hill Medical Practice can help with:

  • Assessing your current situation
  • Performing a mental health assessment
  • Providing personalised and confidential advice
  • Exploring the role of medications
  • Providing referrals to mental health professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrists

Your doctor may also order some blood tests to investigate any underlying concerns such as anaemia, B12 deficiency, thyroid function, or electrolyte levels.

Mental Health Treatment Plan

If you have been diagnosed with a mental health condition, your doctor can create a mental health treatment plan for you that highlights your unique needs, goals, treatment, and referrals. Through this plan, you can access up to 10 free or subsidised individual sessions with a mental health professional each calendar year.

Treatment Options

Treatment options can vary depending on your symptoms and past medical history. The main types of treatment are psychological therapy (e.g., cognitive behavioural therapy, relaxation strategies, skills training, psycho-education), medications (e.g., antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilisers), and lifestyle measures as outlined below.

Self-Care

Talking to your doctor is a good place to start as they can provide treatment or refer you to other services. Doctors at Hunter’s Hill Medical Practice can help with:

  • Getting enough sleep, with at least 7 hours of sleep per night
  • Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Connecting with friends, family, and support networks
  • Pursuing hobbies and enjoyable activities
  • Avoiding drugs and alcohol

Preparing for your appointment

  • It is recommended to book a longer consultation to ensure your doctor has plenty of time to understand your situation and discuss the next steps
  • Write down any questions or concerns you may have to bring with you on the day
  • Ask a trusted friend and family member to accompany you to the appointment if you prefer
