ADHD Care at Our Practice

Continued Prescribing for patients

Our practice supports patients with ADHD through GP prescribing when diagnosed and stable on medications from their treating paediatrician or psychiatrist.

This service is designed for patients who are already diagnosed and stable on their ADHD medication and where your specialist has documented this and is available to review you if this is required.

Because ADHD medications are tightly regulated and require careful medical oversight, we follow strict safety, review and prescribing guidelines.

Who Is Eligible for GP Prescribing?

GP prescribing of ADHD medication is available only when all of the following criteria are met:

  • You are 6 years of age or older
  • Your ADHD diagnosis was made by a paediatrician or psychiatrist
  • Your medication was initiated by your specialist
  • You have been stable on the same medication and dose for at least 6–12 months
  • We have a current specialist letter on file confirming:
  • Diagnosis
  • Medication and dose
  • Clinical stability
  • Request for shared-care GP prescribing

If any of these criteria are not met, GP prescribing cannot be provided and you will be referred back to your specialist for ongoing management.

Appointments & Reviews

To ensure your treatment remains safe and effective:

  • All ADHD prescribing appointments are face-to-face
  • Telehealth, phone, online or AutoMed requests are not available for ADHD medications
  • In-person visits allow us to perform important checks such as blood pressure, heart rate and weight
  • A review appointment is required approximately every 6 months
  • Your next review should be booked at the end of each visit (usually within 5–7 months)

These regular reviews are an important part of keeping you safe on treatment.

Prescribing Boundaries

Your GP’s role is to provide continuation prescribing only for stable patients. This means:

  • GPs will not diagnose ADHD or start ADHD medications
  • GPs will not initiate new medications or major dose changes
  • Significant dose changes or medication class changes require specialist review
  • Appointments are specifically for ADHD medication management only meaning that other medical issues or prescriptions are not addressed in these visits and need to be booked separately.
  • Early repeats or backdated scripts cannot be provided
  • Lost or replacement prescriptions require the previous script to be cancelled and will only occur with a new face-to-face appointment (appointment fees apply).
  • Prescribing may be paused if reviews or monitoring are overdue
  • Prescribing will be stopped if medications are being used faster than prescribed or if safety concerns arise

These boundaries are in place to protect patient safety and comply with prescribing regulations.

Fees (Private Billing)

ADHD prescribing visits are privately billed:

  • These consultations are not bulk billed
  • Typical private fees are approximately $170–$210
  • After the Medicare rebate, the usual out-of-pocket cost is around $80–$120

Our reception team can provide current fee information when booking.

Working Together for Safe ADHD Care

Not all GPs working at HHMP are ADHD prescribes at this stage. Please check with reception to make sure you are booked with the right person.

We aim to provide accessible, safe and coordinated ADHD care in partnership with your specialist. By following these shared-care arrangements and review schedules, we can support continuity of treatment while ensuring appropriate medical oversight.

If you are unsure whether you meet the criteria, our reception team can help guide you before booking.
